One of the most common things we hear from new clients is: "I've wanted to switch for ages — I just thought it would be a hassle." It almost never is. If you're unhappy with your current accountant, you are not stuck. Here's exactly how changing accountant works on the Isle of Man, and why it's far simpler than most people expect.
Will I lose my records or history?
No. Your financial records are yours. When you move, your previous accountant is professionally expected to hand over your books, returns and relevant working papers to your new accountant. This is a normal, routine part of the profession — it happens every day.
You don't need to have an awkward conversation or "break up" with your old accountant. We handle the handover on your behalf.
The process, in four steps
From your side, switching is mostly just saying yes. Here's what actually happens:
- Have a chat with us. We make sure we're the right fit and agree what you need.
- Onboarding & engagement. We complete identity checks (a legal requirement) and put a clear Letter of Engagement in place so you know exactly what we'll do and what it costs.
- Professional clearance. With your permission, we write to your previous accountant for "professional clearance" and to request your records. You don't have to do this part.
- Handover & re-authorisation. We collect your information and get set up as your agent so we can deal with the Income Tax Division on your behalf.
Is there a "right time" to switch?
Honestly, any time works. That said, a couple of moments are especially tidy:
- At your year-end or period-end — a natural clean break between sets of accounts.
- Well before a filing deadline — switching with time to spare is always smoother than doing it in a last-minute rush.
If you're mid-year and frustrated now, don't wait. It's better to move than to spend another year with an accountant who only contacts you when a return is due.
What will it cost me to leave?
Usually nothing to leave — though check your current terms in case any work is in progress. At Seaview we'll be upfront about our fees from the start, with a fixed monthly price so there are no surprises.
The bottom line
Switching accountants on the Isle of Man is simple, low-effort, and something we manage for you end to end. The hardest part is usually just deciding to do it. If you'd like to talk it through with no obligation, we're happy to help.
