UK Tax from theIsle of Man

UK Self Assessment, UK VAT with Making Tax Digital, and UK company filings, handled from the Isle of Man for people with obligations on both sides of the water.

Two systems, one firm

The Isle of Man and the United Kingdom are separate tax jurisdictions, with different rules, different deadlines and different filing systems. Plenty of Island businesses and residents have a foot in both: UK rental property, UK customers, a UK VAT registration, or a company on one side and its owner on the other.

That is where things fall through the gap. Making Tax Digital is the obvious example: it is HMRC's requirement to keep digital records and file through approved software. It does not apply to Isle of Man taxes at all, yet it absolutely applies to a UK VAT registration or to UK income within MTD for Income Tax. Treating a UK obligation as if it were a Manx one, or vice versa, tends to surface later as penalties and correspondence.

We look after both sides as one engagement, so each return is consistent with the other and nothing is assumed to be somebody else's job.

What's included

Every engagement is scoped to what you actually need, so this is the shape of the work rather than a fixed package.

Cross-border advice

Residence, where a company is managed from, and how the two systems interact, worked out before it becomes a problem.

Who this is for

  • Isle of Man residents with UK rental property or other UK income to declare.
  • Island businesses holding a UK VAT registration or selling into the UK.
  • Owners of UK companies who live or operate on the Isle of Man.

Common questions

No. MTD is a UK (HMRC) programme and it does not apply to Isle of Man taxes. Isle of Man VAT returns are filed with Isle of Man Customs & Excise through their own online service. But if you hold a UK VAT registration, or have UK income caught by MTD for Income Tax, MTD does apply to that side, and we keep it compliant for you.
UK property income normally needs a UK Self Assessment return, and as an Isle of Man resident you declare your worldwide income here too. Relief under the double taxation agreement usually stops you paying twice, but the two returns need to agree with each other. Keeping them consistent is exactly what we do.
It can matter a great deal. Where a company is managed and controlled affects where it is tax resident, and getting that wrong is expensive to unwind. If this describes you, talk to us before making any changes rather than after.
Yes. We prepare and file UK returns and correspond with HMRC for you, in the same way we deal with the Isle of Man authorities on the Manx side, so you have one firm across both.
