Isle of ManVAT Returns

Registration, return preparation and filing, plus straight answers on place of supply (which country's VAT applies when you sell beyond the Island), the question that catches Isle of Man businesses out more than anything else.

Common questions

That depends on your turnover, what you supply and to whom. There is a registration threshold (currently £90,000 of taxable turnover in a rolling twelve months), and there are situations where registering voluntarily below it is the better commercial decision. It is worth a short conversation rather than a guess, because the answer genuinely differs by business.
Errors can usually be corrected, and doing so promptly and voluntarily is very different from having one found for you. If you think something previous is wrong, tell us and we will look at it properly.
It can, significantly. Place of supply is the single most common area where Isle of Man businesses get VAT wrong, and it depends on what you sell as well as where the customer is. This is exactly the kind of thing to check before you invoice rather than afterwards.
No. MTD is a UK (HMRC) programme and it does not apply to Isle of Man VAT. Isle of Man returns are filed with Isle of Man Customs & Excise through their own online service, and we handle that filing for you. If you also hold a UK VAT registration, MTD may apply to that side, and we can look after it as part of our UK services.
Yes. We will want to look at the periods already filed so we understand what has been done, but there is no need to wait for a year-end to move.

What's included

Every engagement is scoped to what you actually need, so this is the shape of the work rather than a fixed package.

Return preparation and filing

Prepared from reconciled records and submitted to Isle of Man Customs & Excise for the relevant period, on time.

Registration and deregistration

Advice on whether and when you need to register, and handling the process if you do.

Place-of-supply advice

Which country's VAT rules apply to each sale, based on where your customer is and what you supply.

Records that stand up

The evidence behind each return kept in order, so a query is an inconvenience rather than a crisis.

Where VAT actually goes wrong

For most businesses VAT is not difficult in principle. It goes wrong in the details: which rate applies to an unusual supply, whether a customer outside the Island changes the treatment, what can be recovered on a mixed-use cost, and whether the records behind the return would survive being asked about.

The Isle of Man's VAT position is closely tied to the UK's, which helps in some situations and surprises people in others, particularly where cross-border services are involved. Getting the treatment right at the point the transaction happens is far easier than unpicking it later.

We prepare and file your returns from properly reconciled records, and when something genuinely is a grey area we tell you it is a grey area rather than guessing and hoping.

Who this is for

  • Businesses approaching, at, or over the registration threshold and unsure what to do about it.
  • Anyone supplying customers outside the Isle of Man and uncertain how that affects their VAT.
  • Registered businesses who would rather someone else owned the quarterly deadline.
